I was sitting in a cafe in New Zealand when it struck. That infamous, undeniable spark of inspiration so powerful it could have been a lightening bolt to the head. I was about four months and 10 women’s self help and travel books into my journey abroad when it dawned on me: I wanted to do the same thing. I could see and feel it all immediately. Me, travelling the world, writing about my experiences, helping women grow and understand their true nature and potentiality. Ahh yes. It felt so right. It felt so good. I’m pretty sure I could literally hear my heart sing. If this was a movie, it would have ended there and gone something like this: “And so it was. Hilary went on to be a successful travel writer, changing the lives of thousands of women and hers in the process.” The end. Cue inspirational music and twinkle in eye while departing to a new exotic destination. But this is real life people. What happened after that moment? I picked up a journal (certain I would be the next Cheryl Strayed or Elizabeth Gilbert) and after about a week of the feels, I stopped. Instead of […]

There’s nothing like opening a freshly purchased notebook, cracking open the front cover to a clean, blank page. It beckons to be written on. New ideas. New possibilities. So much promise. So much hope. And so it is with the start of a new year. It’s as though all of the hardships of the previous year (heck, sometimes many previous years) have been forgiven. Wiped away. And you are free to start anew. As glorious as that feeling is, let’s be honest: it’s a hell of a lot of pressure. As a Virgo and thereby an ever recovering perfectionist, I know a thing or two about pressure. When I was a little girl, I used to love (a capital L kind of love) getting my new notebooks and sketchbooks at the beginning of the school year because they were perfect. Clean. Tidy. Full of potential. Ohh how I could barely wait fill my books. I would visualize writing with perfect penmanship and creating brilliant works of art. Every year I’d look down on those blank pages my soul would fill with inspiration as I felt I was surely about to embark on a collection of masterpieces. There was only one […]

“The world belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt I want to let you in on a little secret. As a dreamer myself, and diligently watching other dreamers I look up to for nearly a decade, I have come to realize that there are only two things you need to take your desires and make them your reality. Here’s the thing: They are the most readily available tools at your fingertips, but the hardest for us to truly grasp. Why? Because it requires you to do something that we are innately hardwired NOT to do. I’m talking, “red alert, sound the alarm, slam on the brakes, mayday, mayday!” kind of mental resistance. Yet, it is the key to having everything that you want. This magic duo is the only compass and roadmap you will ever need. So what is it and why then, do we resist? First, lets cover the why: We’re hardwired to fear the unknown. So much so that anything remotely uncertain turns our mind into a theatrical drama queen who breaks out into a hissy-fit and demands we do things her way: Safe. Structured. Reasonable. Foreseeable. (In other words, boring). […]

There it was. The infamous fork in the road. I’ll never cease to be amazed at how life intervenes when we’ve stopped listening to our truth and lovingly presents with a crossroad. Mine was a long time coming. Despite all of the warning signs along the way, I had been going in a direction that didn’t feel right. But I carried on regardless because it was scarier to acknowledge how much was going wrong. “Keep the blinders up Hilary, and everything will be ok” I subconsciously told myself. But, everything was far from ok. Instead of checking off the ‘must have’s in your 20’s’ list (career, relationship, home, baby), I seemed to be achieving the opposite: I was deeply in debt. I couldn’t find a job in my field (not to mention I wasn’t sure if it was the right fit to begin with). I had to move back in with my parents. I needed to continue waitressing to support myself. And to add the icing on my satirical cake, my relationship had come to a screeching end. Needless to say, this was not the happily ever after I had imagined. The breakup was my breaking point. I was forced […]

Ever have that feeling? The one where it seems like your running in circles and getting nowhere fast? Or despite your best intentions and efforts, it feels like no matter what you do, you keep hitting that infamous invisible wall? “What gives?” You might be thinking. I mean you are truly ready to make a change in your life: Ready to go after your dreams. That promotion. That new fitness regime. That relationship you’ve been waiting for. AND…..nada. Your left in the lurch, waiting, anticipating the arrival of something spectacular and IT. NEVER. COMES. Or so it would seem. There’s only one thing is getting in your way darling and that is resistance. Resistance comes in all shapes and sizes: perfectionism, excuses, frustration, blame. No matter what form of resistance you’re experiencing it all comes down to being fearful of what could happen if you actually listened to your heart and went after what you truly wanted. You could actually be successful and that’s scary. You could fail and that’s scary. You might fall in love and that’s scary. People might treat you differently (aka you may no longer fit in with your ‘tribe’) and that’s scary. You have to […]
