3 Steps to Change Your Story and Get Out of Your Own Way

3 STEPS to

I’m going to share a story with you.

(Something that took me a decade to really and truly learn.)

You see, you my darling, are meant for greatness. Deep down you know it too.

It could simply be a small voice calling out to you for more, poking at you with a gentle curiosity. Or it could be a soul shaking certainty, begging you to DO SOMETHING. Either way, it’s there and you have a choice:

To listen or ignore.

Imagine if you would, that you have a friend named Sarah. You and Sarah go way back. You love her unconditionally as she does you. Sarah knows you better than anyone, sees you for who you really are and what you’re really capable of. You really cherish your relationship with her. She lifts you up, steers you back when you go a little of course and is always there for you.

One day however, you find yourself caught up in life’s to-do’s. (Life can have a sneaky habit of running our lives instead of the other way around). Sarah calls you, but you are too busy to answer. You think to yourself, ‘I’ll call her when I have more time.’ She calls the next day. Then the next. All to no avail.

Eventually, Sarah’s calls are far and few between, until one day they stop all together. You tell yourself, that’s just the way it is, that’s just the way life goes. But deep down you can’t shake this terrible feeling that you let her down. And now, every time you want to pick up the phone, you stop yourself because there has been too much time and you feel too guilty to dial her number to tell her what you’ve been thinking all along, ‘I’m sorry. I love you. You matter. I shouldn’t have been so busy that I didn’t make time for you.’ So the line remains closed. All that is left is a haunting, residual feeling of ‘what if’ that bubbles up every time you look at your phone.

Now, imagine the same story, but this time your friend is your inner voice; that inner knowing that holds your deepest dreams, desires and possibilities. The same rings true.

The more you listen to this voice, the more it will be there to guide you.

It will continue to provide inspiration, new opportunities and ideas. The more you listen, believe and take action, the more that voice will show up and shine with inner confidence, leading you to everything you ever wanted and everything you are.

Likewise, the more you choose to disregard that voice, the softer it gets.

Until the day you’ve lost the gumption to answer your own call and you’re left with nothing but a feeling of ‘what if?’

But here’s the secret: it’s never too late.

No matter how quiet that voice gets, it never fully goes away. It can’t because IT IS YOU. No matter how much time has gone by since you’ve truly listened to what you REALLY want for yourself, you have the chance to choose differently; to say YES.

Today could be the day. YOUR DAY.

To help get you get started, try this:

1) Ask. Ask yourself, if you could do ONE thing today to get closer to your dreams, what would it be?

2) Schedule it. Whatever the answer is. It doesn’t need to be big or grandiose. Just one simple step you could take. It could be a phone call to a gym or reaching out to someone you know for support or signing up for a course. Maybe it’s simply choosing to listen and taking time to hear what that inner voice has to say. Action is the thing that will get you to where you deserve to go.

3) Savour. Take a moment and ask yourself how it feels to listen to your truest self? How does it feel to say yes to you and take a step towards your dreams? That is the mojo that will help you keep going!

No one but you is in charge of how your story is written. You can pick up that pen any day you like and change the outcome. All it takes (and I mean truly, all it takes) is for you to be willing to answer the call and choose to listen.

The truest part of you is waiting.

I’d love to hear from you in the comments below. What’s your one thing YOU can do today? <3

Lots of love,

Hilary

So… I did it. I listened to my inner-self and decided to take a big step in my post-baby, new mom bod struggles and signed up for Weight Watchers in my home town. I have been struggling for 4 months every time I looked in the mirror. After reading your post, I realized I needed to stop ignoring my inner voice and instead listen. So, I’ve endeavoured to take a huge leap in my weight loss journey. Thanks for this post- just what I needed today. Sometimes, we just need to stop and listen! Thank-you, Hilary!
